Rick Warren: Christians and Muslims Serve the Same God? 02/28/2012

The Orange County Register carries the story of Rick Warren’s latest endeavor, a new effort dubbed, the King’s Way.

Here is how the OC Register describes it:
The Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest and one of America’s most influential Christian leaders, has embarked on an effort to heal divisions between evangelical Christians and Muslims by partnering with Southern California mosques and proposing a set of theological principles that includes acknowledging that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

The men presented a document they co-authored outlining points of agreement between Islam and Christianity. The document affirms that Christians and Muslims believe in “one God” and share two central commandments: “love of God” and “love of neighbor.” The document also commits both faiths to three goals: Making friends with one another, building peace and working on shared social service projects. The document quotes side-by-side verses from the Bible and the Koran to illustrate its claims.

Some of Rick Warren’s most staunch defenders may attempt to defend him by claiming he’s making it possible to reach these Muslims with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Not so. Jihad Turk, director of religious affairs at a mosque in Los Angeles, had this to say:
“We agreed we wouldn’t try to evangelize each other,” said Turk. “We’d witness to each other but it would be out of ‘Love Thy Neighbor,’ not focused on conversion.”

This is all a part of Rick Warren’s PEACE plan – Warren’s effort to perfect the world without the saving grace of Jesus Christ, as if somehow solving all of society’s ills will make this world a better place. An effort that will end in no one being saved, and all being led further down the path of destruction. Humanism is not the power of God to salvation, the gospel is – and it cannot be compromised.

Special Note: In the article, Rick Warren denies rumors that he is promulgating a new religion called Chrislam. Warren says:
The “rumor is 100 percent false,” Warren wrote at Pastors.com, a website he founded that provides practical advice to church leaders. “My life and ministry are built on the truth that Jesus is the only way, and our inerrant Bible is our only true authority.”

What Warren’s statement does NOT do, however, is contradict the document authored by one of Saddleback’s pastors, Abraham Meulenberg, and Jihad Turk, director of religious affairs at a mosque in Los Angeles. This document, according to the Orange County Register,”The document affirms that Christians and Muslims believe in “one God” and share two central commandments: “love of God” and “love of neighbor.”

(I have written a Koran commentary and never found a verse about loving your neighbor in the book)
