Did You Know Tarzan won 5 Gold Medals in the Olympics?
by Moody Adams Tarzan actually participated in the Olympic Games--before he became a movie star. Johnny Weissmuller won three golds and a bronze in 1924, and two golds in 1928. He broke 24 world records and was crowned national champion 33 times in different events.
MGM Studios asked him to try out for the role of Tarzan, the ape man. He hesitated to take the role until they told him he could have lunch with Greta Garbo and Clark Gable. He took the role and became a star in the role which featured him swimming in African rivers.
Weissmuller became the sixth actor to portray Edgar Rice Burroughs's ape man Tarzan in films, a role he played in twelve motion pictures. Dozens of other actors have also played Tarzan, but Weissmuller is by far the best known.
