Fuchida, who led the Attack on Pearl Harbour Became an Evangelist
Receive the New Birth
Jesus commanded, "Ye must be born again" (John 3:7).
Jesus gave this command during a conversation with a devout Jewish leader named Nicodemus: “Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. " "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit" (John 3:1-8).
Though this command is given to one man, Nicodemus, Jesus applied it to all men. All men are born depraved, shaped in iniquity. A second birth is required to give them a new nature. Christ said a man cannot "see" the kingdom of heaven--he cannot understand it without being born again by the Spirit of God. This is the malady, the great sickness of the human race. All men are born with an evil nature. Though it is a surprised to parents, governments and churches, it still breaks forth in horrific acts. Only when Christ enters the human heart by His Spirit can this be changed.
Christ bluntly added no one can ever enter heaven without this transforming birth: Even the most moral, most religious person will never get to heaven unless he experienced this new birth.
Jake De Shazer was a pilot in the famous Dootlittle Raid that bombed Japan near the end of WWII. He crashed in China and was taken prisoner. They tortured him and starved him in the Shanghai prison camp.
After the war, Jake returned to Japan was a missionary. He was handing out tracts titled "I Was a War Prisoner of Japan" outside Tokyo's Shibuya Station. Mitsuo Fuchida, the only Pearl Harbor pilot to live through the war, received a tract. Fuchida, who led the attack on Pearl Harbour, read the tract, was “born again,” and became an outstanding evangelist.
Jake De Shazer turned a bitter enemy into a Christian brother and coworker. (Read full story in Pulpit Helps, Oct 1991. Pages 2-3).
