Proverbs for Father's Day 06/11/2013

by Moody Adams
The Bible instructed, “Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding” (Prov. 4:1). This is impossible for millions of children growing up in a home without their dad. We live in a nation where only a little over half of children live in a house with a father and married mother. And those who do live in the house with their fathers have no close relationship. Dad is busy working or playing golf.

The child is busy with computer games or TV. This leaves little time for “hear… the instruction of a father.”

The Bible’s book of Proverbs gives these additional instructions to children regarding their fathers:

“A wise son hears his father’s instruction: but a scorner hears not rebuke” (13:1).

“A fool despises his father’s instruction: but he that regards reproof is prudent” (15:5).

“A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him” (17:25).

“He that wastes his father, and chases away his mother, is a son that causes shame, and brings reproach” (19:26).

“My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother: Bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them about your neck. When you go, it shall lead you; when you sleep, it shall keep you; and when you awake, it shall talk with you” (6:20-22).
