by Moody Adams Ignorance of the Bible has produced a host of church members indulging in the sin of drinking alcohol.
They excuse this by saying, Jesus drank, Paul drank, and the Bible approves it! They are ignorant of the fact that the word wine is used in the Bible to refer to both fermented grape juice and to unfermented grape juice.
The Bible refers to many kinds of wine, “all sorts of wine.” Nehemiah 5:18 says there are “all sorts of wine, There are 3 Herew words translated 'wine.' And two Greek words translated 'wine' in the New Testament. Unfermented wine comes forth from the earth, while no alcohol does and it brings gladness to the heart of man. “He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine , and bread which strengtheneth man's heart” (Psalms 104:14, 15).
The Bible warns against even looking at strong, fermented wine, “Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup , when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.” (Proverbs 23:31,32).
Isaiah 5:22 warns not to look at fermented, strong wine: “Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:”
Isaiah 28:7 says, “But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.”
