Moody Adams When Columbus sailed the Atlantic to America, the crew was concerned about sailing off the edge of the earth. Why? Because all the men of science agreed that the world was flat. In 1530 Copernicus published a pamphlet declaring the world round. But he was not the first to publish such radical news. Over 2,200 years before, Isaiah wrote in the Bible: He (God) sits upon the circle of the earth (Isaiah 40:22). All the ancient scientists believed the earth rested on some foundation. The Egyptian scientists taught that the flat earth was held up by five pillars; one on each corner and one in the middle. Greek scientists disagreed. They said a strong man named Atlas was supporting it on his back. Hindus had another belief. They said the world rested on the back of an elephant. The elephant stood on the back of a giant turtle. The turtle was swimming in a cosmic sea. It was not until the sixteenth century, when Copernicus convinced mankind that the world was not resting upon anything, that this scientific error was corrected. Long before man discovered this, Job wrote: He (God) . . . hangs the earth upon nothing. (Job 26:7). Jesus underscored this when He said that at His sudden, instantaneous return it would be night in part of the world and daytime in other parts: Two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left (Luke 17:34-36). In 1630 Galileo discovered that air had weight. But long before, in one of the Bible’s oldest books, it says that: God assigns the weight for the winds (Job 28:25). Galileo also discovered that wind traveled in regular circuits. Thousands of years before, the Bible’s book of Job said: The wind goes toward the south, and turns about unto the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits (Ecclesiastes 1:6). The Bible contains none of such errors which embarrass other ancient writings. It reveals facts of science man would not learn until thousands of years later. The only possible reason is that there was more than mere human reason that went into its writings. God had to be the Author of the Bible!
