Divorcee and Unwed Parenting cost Taxpayers Billions
by Moody Adams "Divorce and out-of-wedlock childbearing cost U.S. taxpayers more than $112 billion a year, according to a study commissioned by four groups advocating more government action to bolster marriages," says the Associated Press.
This study,by Georgia State University economist Ben Scafidi, was the first study to calculate "family fragmentation" — both divorce and unwed childbearing.
"The study documents for the first time that divorce and unwed childbearing — besides being bad for children — are costing taxpayers a ton of money," said David Blankenhorn, president of the Institute for American Values.
"We keep hearing this from state legislators, 'Explain to me why this is any of my business? Aren't these private matters?'" Blankenhorn said. "Take a look at these numbers and tell us if you still have any doubt."
Government programs have not been successful in strenthening marriage. The responsibility falls on the church. There needs to be strong teaching on what the Bible says about divorce.
Malachi 2:16a says God hates divorce, "For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away"
In Matthew 19:3-6 Jesus informs us, "The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."
While the church must stress forgiveness for the innocent victims of divorce, she must also hold up the Biblical standard for the young.
