By Moody Adams Pope Benedict is visiting America to promote a religion in decline. The 67 million Catholics hope he is the man that can overcome their crises:
Sex-abuse that has cost the church $2 billion.
Church closings. Sixty churches have closed in the Boston area, 58 in New Jersey and over 20 in New Orleans. There are 700 fewer parishes than in 1995.
Only 55% of Catholics say they practice their religion
Ten Percent of Catholics have converted to other faiths.
Severe shortage of priests.
Ignorance of their faith. Stphen Prothero writes, “Young Catholics are shockingly ignorant of the most basic tenets of their faith. Many cannot name any of the four Gospels or identify Genesis as the first book of the Bible.
