by Moody AdamsPat Robertson, the Christian TV personality, stirred up the country that the deadly Haitian earthquake that is believed to have killed thousands of people is God's vengeance for a "pact" Haitians swore to the Devil. He said Haitians were cursed because they made a "deal" with the Devil to free themselves from the French rule.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said of Robertson: "It never ceases to amaze me that in times of amazing human suffering, somebody says something that can be so utterly stupid."

Both men evidently had some direct communication with the Lord to form such dogmatic opinions about God’s activities.

• All mankind suffers from a curse in the Garden of Eden that brought death and suffering to all Adam’s descendants. Since this fall of man in Eden all mankind must suffer natural calamities: “And unto Adam he said , Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee , saying , Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life” (Genesis 3:17).

Jesus further explained two other calamities in Luke 13: “There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent , ye shall all likewise perish . 4 Or those eighteen , upon whom the tower in Siloam fell , and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent , ye shall all likewise perish.”

We must look at the agony of the Haitians and see what horrors are coming for all humans who do not repent of their sins and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness..

Greg Stier writes what death means for those who do repent, “While we tend to see death as a tragedy, God sees it as transition. The loss of life at the powerful hands of an earthquake wasn’t the end but the beginning, the dawn of a new existence, the start of a new journey. Those Christians who died that day may have left this earth with a scream but they entered the gates of heaven with a song. Theirs was a triumphant transition into the very presence of God. For the children of God who went home to their Daddy they wouldn’t come back to earth if they could. (Christian Post Guest Columnist)
