It was a glorious rescue! America stopped ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ And Fox News even dropped its political arguing. Over 1 billion people watched the climax of the two-month rescue live on television networks around the world.
The long, dark months were torturous to the 33 trapped miners, “I was with God and I was with the devil,” Mario Sepulveda, the second man freed said. “They both fought for me. God won.”
The twelfth man rescued, Edison Pena, said, “I can’t believe we are all alive,” as he emerged to cheers, bear hugs and back slaps.
The miners were trapped for 69 days after 700,000 tons of rock collapsed Aug. 5 and sealed the men in the lower reaches of the mine. For 17 days no one knew if any of them were alive.
President Sebastian Pinera said, “We have given an example to the world of commitment, of effort, of hope. I’m convinced that Chile’s greatest treasure isn’t copper, it’s the miners.”
It was an historic, glorious rescue. It reminds us of the greatest rescue of all when Jesus died and rose again to rescue men from sin and death. As the Bible tells us, Jesus came to rescue us from the wrath that comes on sinners: “Ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come (I Thessalonians 1:9-10).
