by Moody Adams “A truck driver about to loose his job for allegedly stealing beer killed eight men Tuesday and injured two others before killing himself in a shooting rampage at the beer distributorship where he worked, police said,” reports USATODAY. The company had photographs of him stealing and had to terminate him.
Why did he do it? Why did he kill eight men and then kill himself? Was it because of racial discrimination? Was he crazy? Did he get “pushed over the edge?” Was he a Muslim?
Matthew 15:19 says, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.”
Man is born with a serious defect. He has evil in his heart. You can see it in a baby, screaming when he doesn’t have his way; biting other children; taken the toys away from others, etc. The child learns to cover this up, to hide the evil as he grows older.
God established three institutions to control evil: the home to teach him to restrain the evil; the government to punish the evil, and the church to convert man’s evil heart.
God promises a “new heart:” “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).
David prayed for a new heart, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalms 51:10). Forgiveness was not enough. He needed a new, clear heart.
Jesus declared the necessity of a new birth, “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).
