STUDY: ALCOHOL MORE LETHAL THAN HEROIN, COCAINE 11/03/2010

Heroin and crack cocaine are more dangerous for you, but alcohol is more dangerous for the nation, according to a study published in the Lancet medical journal.

• Alcohol can damage nearly all the body’s organ system.
• Alcohol is linked to a higher death rate than any drug.
• Alcohol is involved in more crime than other drugs.
• Alcohol breaks up more families than any drug.
• Alcohol costs us more than any drug for health care and social services.
• Alcohol costs us more for imprisoning users than other drugs.

In spite of all the damage and expense people want it—demand it.

"We cannot return to the days of prohibition," said Leslie King, an adviser to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and one of the study's authors. "Alcohol is too embedded in our culture and it won't go away."
